Clifton Photonics, as part of a consortium led by Cavendish Nuclear Ltd, have won a funding bid to help deliver innovation in the sorting and segregation of radioactive waste in the nuclear industry.
Financed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, in partnership with Innovate UK, the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition aims to develop an autonomous and integrated toolkit to sort and segregate radioactive waste generated by nuclear decommissioning activities.
Split into two phases, the initial work includes a three-month technical research and development feasibility study, at the end of which the Cavendish Nuclear consortia will compete with other phase 1 winners for further funding, taking their concept to the next stage, which is to demonstrate system operation.
The end goal of the project and the purpose of the competition is to introduce novel technologies to reduce the level of nuclear waste requiring disposal, increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve safety.
Further information on the project can be found in the Cavendish Nuclear Press Release, Innovative Real-Time Waste Sorting and Segregation Technology Development
